What's the betting that a few people will google the title of this blog post and be disappointed to find beetles and flies!
In a nutshell, Belinda and I had a very hot and slow walk around Thelnetham Fen on Sunday. The temperatures were far too high for our usual walking so we ambled a few of the paths on the look out for bugs. And boy did we find a few. The use of macro photography really brings out the details and colours of these often tiny things. We found 24-spot Ladybird, 14-spot Ladybird, 7-spot Ladybird, Harlequin Ladybird, Woundwort Shieldbug, Tortoise Shieldbug, Common Green Shieldbug, Red-spotted Plant Bug (both the orange and black forms), Black Plant Bug, Nettle Plant Bug, Common Froghopper, the green beetle Plagiognathus arbustorum, Dark Bush-cricket, Speckled Bush-cricket, Square-spot Deerfly, the tiny bronze beetle Halticus luteicollis, Little Snipefly, Essex Skipper and Yellow-and-black Longhorn Beetle.
Into the bargain I also found 2 new plants - Black Bog-rush and False Fox-sedge making it a very worthwhile walk.
At Redgrave and Lopham Fen afterwards it was too hot for doing anything apart from have a nice coffee in the shade from the weekend coffee wagon there and to find a surprise Cut-leaved Bramble nearby.
In the evening when it had cooled we had a walk at Dickleburgh Moor which was very quiet but 2-3 Purple Hairstreaks were in oaks along Semere Lane and I found a locally rare beetle Alder Leaf Beetle. The Pedunculate Club-rush found there last summer is doing very well.
