Catfield Hall Fungus Foray, 7 October 2023

A superb foray out with the Norfolk Fungus Study Group. One of the good things about outings with the NFSG is gaining access to places that would normally be out of bounds and the estate of Catfield Hall was just that.

About a dozen of us explored a mixture of habitats - alder carr, reedbeds, meadows, wet marshland and beech/oak woodland. And boy did we finish with an impressive list and some absolute stunners!

I won't list every species but the best were probably Alder Scalycap, Scaly Fibrecap, the incredibly rare Frogbit Smut, Vermillion Waxcap, Glistening Waxcap, Greyshank Bolete, Brown Birch Bolete, Parasitic Bolete, Plain Earthtongue, Swamp Webcap, Alder Webcap, Crested Coral, Earthfan, Ergot, Alder Tongue, Golden Scalycap, Blackening Brittlegill, Spectacular Rustgill, Beech Milkcap, Rufous Milkcap, Ugly Milkcap, White Saddle, Sphagnum Brownie, Rush Bonnet, Star Pinkgill, Bulbous Fibrecap, Lilac Bonnet, Bald Inkcap, Beechmast Candlesnuff and Purple Brittlegill. Needless to say many of these were completely new for me.

Into the bargain Jeremy brought along a couple of specimens for 'pot ticks' - Warty Cavalier and Ascot Hat and Stewart did the same with some lovely moths - Clancy's Rustic, Delicate, Pink-barred Sallow and Mervielle du Jour. On the foray Vanna found us Noon Fly and the harvestman Lophopilio palpinalis.

A surprise certificate!

Last week I was very surprised and pleased to receive a 'certificate of appreciation' from The State of India's Birds survey.

This annual survey is to assess the distribution, range and abundance of 942 species of bird that occur in India. It is a important survey that helps in setting the conservation status of the birds of the country.

My certificate was in recognition of the 134 checklists I uploaded onto eBird while in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh back in March.

Holt Lowes, Wiveton Downs and Blakeney, 29 September - 1 October 2023

A long weekend up in North Norfolk in our motorhome.

On Friday evening and again on Saturday morning we walked various trails on Holt Lowes/Holt Country Park. In lovely early autumn sun we found quite a bit of interest. Botanically it was great to see plenty of Lesser Skullcap in flower (at it's only Norfolk site) along with masses of Round-leaved Sundew, Marsh Lousewort and a few plants of Heath Milkwort. A late single male Keeled Skimmer was patrolling a pond in the wet valley with Southern Hawker, Migrant Hawker and Common Darter also being seen.

It was fungi that stole the show though with several great finds - Bog Waxcap, Mottled Bolete and Greyshank Bolete on the Lowes were followed by Pale Stagshorn, Petticoat Brittlestem, Woolly Fibrecap, The Flirt, The Sickener, Beefsteak Fungus and Tawny Grisette in the mature woodland of the country park.

Wiveton Downs on Saturday evening yielded not much except Bluefoot Bolete and Suede Bolete and then along Blakeney Bank on Sunday morning a Devil's Coach Horse Beetle showed nicely on the path.
