As is traditional (and almost compulsory!) at this time of year I have been out and about around several places locally in search of fungi.
Although still pretty dry Tyrrel’s Wood yielded some nice Spectacular Rustgills on 2nd October together with Chicken-of-the-Woods, Sticky Scalycap, Southern Bracket, Stump Puffball, Deathcap and Bulbous Honey Fungus.
A walk at Knettishall Heath on 5th was remarkable for the sheer numbers of Bay Boletes of which we saw hundreds. Golden Waxcap, Bluefoot Bolete and Purplepore Bracket were the best of the rest.
On 7th I called in to see Jeremy and Vanna for a catch-up and Jeremy produced a marvellous specimen of what has turned out to be Echinoderma calcicola. A very unusual but distinctive fungi and the first county record since 1920!
On Friday 10th while on a favourite walk of ours at Earsham/Bath Hills/Bungay I took a short detour onto Outney Common to check on the Russula subrubens I discovered there in 2023. I was pleased to see them still present in good numbers alongside several Blushing Milkcaps and a Blackfoot Polypore.
Finally on 12th at home on the front lawn were 2 Peppery Roundheads, our 2nd record.

Terrific stuff! (Do you ever eat any of your 'found' fungi?)
