With things ramping up at this time of year the NFSG has fortnightly forays and this one was a return visit to Tacolneston Hall. We last went there last spring so an autumn visit was definitely in order for a different array of species. It’s also very nice to have access to site that a normally private and out of bounds!
Exploring the walled garden followed by the woods and adjacent grassland the group found plenty of interest. From a personal point of view Chestnut Brittlestem, Fatal Dapperling, Yellowedge Bonnet, Flat Oysterling and Pink Domecap were all new ones to me but other goodies included Xylaria cinerea, Blackedge Bonnet, Fragrant Funnel, Lemon Disco, Bleeding Broadleaf Crust, Iodine Bonnet, Bleeding Bonnet, Velvet Twiglet, Velvet Shield and Fenugreek Stalkball. In all over 200 species were recorded.
With Vanna in attendance there were a few good invertebrates found too. No less than 3 species of pseudoscorpion - Compost Chernes, Knotty Shining Claw and Common Chthonid. Common Issid Bug and Banded Rhopalid were also good finds for late in the season. Moths too were good with Dotted Chestnut (a personal tick), Turnip Moth and the spectacular caterpillar of Pale Tussock.
